How Teeth Whitening Works
Teeth can become discolored for several reasons:

Teeth Whitening involves the use of a gel containing a chemical called carbamide peroxide. This substance penetrates the tooth enamel and oxidizes the stain deposits that lead to discoloration.
Effective Teeth Whitening Techniques
Instead of less-effective over-the-counter methods, I recommend custom home Teeth Whitening trays or laser Teeth Whitening.
- Custom tray systems. With these systems, you simply wear trays containing whitening gel while you sleep. Systems like NiteWhite and Opalescence can provide Teeth Whitening Toronto patients with excellent results in one to two weeks, with occasional touch-ups to maintain the desired tooth whiteness.
- In-office Teeth Whitening. This method involves the use of light energy to activate the whitening solution and produce faster results. Light-assisted Teeth Whitening produces the same results as custom trays, but in a shorter period of time.

Do Over-the-Counter Teeth Whiteners Work?
Over-the-counter Teeth Whitening products can provide some improvement for your smile. But they have drawbacks.
- Teeth Whitening toothpastes lack the strength to bring about much change in the whiteness of your teeth, and they cause significant tooth sensitivity.
- Whitening stripes produce results, but they’re not custom fitted. They can be hard to use, take longer to produce results and can cause chemical burns to the gums.
